Franck Ribery broke down in tears as he said goodbye to the Salernitana fans, having announced his retirement this week.

Wearing his kit for the last time, the 39-year-old walked around the pitch of the Stadio Arechi and saluted the supporters.

The France legend managed only two appearances this season, one in Serie A and another in the Coppa Italia, before realising the recurring knee injuries meant he would have to hang up his boots.

He has joined Davide Nicola’s coaching staff at Salernitana, the first step to what will probably be a management career.

Ribery saw out his time in Italy at Fiorentina from 2019-21 and then joined Salernitana in September 2021.

His previous clubs include Boulogne, Olympiques Ales, Stade Brestois, FC Metz, Galatasaray, Olympique Marseille and for 12 years Bayern Munich.
