The tension was sky high at the Stadio Bentegodi and continued after the final whistle, as Verona felt Fiorentina mocked them with goal celebrations and Cristiano Biraghi scoring with a quick free kick from his own half.

The two sets of fans were twinned, although the events of this evening might potentially change that in future.

Former Verona player Antonin Barak opened the scoring and made an apologetic wave to his old crowd, but the situation deteriorated after Arthur Cabral made it 2-0 on 38 minutes.

Cabral, Dodo and Igor joined together to do a choreographed dance right in front of the end containing the Verona ultras.

Their teammate Sofyan Amrabat ran over and pushed them away, aware that this was going to fire up the atmosphere in a negative fashion.

Hellas players and staff were furious at the third goal, as Rolando Mandragora was still on the ground after a foul and Verona players were checking on him when Biraghi took the free kick quickly, scoring from the centre-circle.

He celebrated by doing the ‘salute’ almost five years on from the death of captain Davide Astori, while many in the stadium were still trying to work out what had happened.

The tension escalated after the final whistle, as the referee had to prevent some Verona players going for Biraghi.
