The midfielder has repeatedly been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Juventus, among others.

But the 22-year-old has said that he is more than happy where he was.

“I'm lucky because I'm in a great club and I play for the national team,” Verratti has said, in an interview with Le Parisien.

“Serie A is no longer what it was, even though it has the resources for a rebirth.

“Now the Italian teams should focus more on their youth teams and the young Italian talents.

“Returning to Italy? Why bother? I'm fine where I am.”

Nonetheless in a separate interview published today for BeIN Sports, he showed appreciation for La Gazzetta dello Sport dubbing him the 'best Italian player'.

“I'm pleased because it's a very widely read newspaper in Italy.

“If they write of me that way, it means that I'm playing well and that I must keep on like this.”

The player's view of his team and in particular of himself, on the other hand, were expressed in a much lower key.

“We still haven't done anything. I still haven't done anything. I have such a long way to go.”
