Simone Verdi insists “I didn’t say no to Napoli, I said yes to Bologna” because “I’ve found my home for the first time here”.
The winger had an offer from the Partenopei in January, but he ultimately decided to turn it down as he didn’t want to leave the Rossoblu mid-season.
“Seriously, I didn’t say no to Napoli,” Verdi insisted, speaking to Corriere della Sera.

“Seriously, I didn’t say no to Napoli,” Verdi insisted, speaking to Corriere della Sera.
“I said yes to my journey with Bologna. I couldn’t leave in January after all the confidence they gave me when I’d come in after being relegated with Carpi.
“It all became much bigger than it should have been. I had to hear so many falsehoods, bad things even about my family and my girlfriend, that she interfered in my choice. Then I was wrong too…
“I should have intervened immediately to explain things and calm the waters. Instead my privacy, which I consider a virtue, made the situation worse.
“Napoli’s offer could have changed my career, I’m well aware of that. But after playing for six teams at the age of 25 I’ve found my home for the first time here. I feel like I have a project I have to see through to June.
“Right now let’s think about the present.
“Did other clubs get involved? That makes me laugh. I can decide for myself, no-one crossed the wires.
“Maybe I sent the wrong message, but let me be clear: the problem was not Napoli, I never said yes and then changed my mind.
“[Coach Maurizio] Sarri called me, it was a friendly call and he understood, with a lot of serenity and sensitivity.
“It’s easy to make judgements from outside. It’s bad to say this, because a lot of people struggle to make it to the end of the month, but I can already live well as it is.
“Fortunately money isn’t a priority, I can decide based on passion alone.
“Was I afraid? A player’s ambition is always to play with great champions. But I repeat: I’m at home here.”
