Giampiero Ventura admits Italy “cannot play the same way” against Germany after testing the 4-2-4 system with Liechtenstein.

The Azzurri scored all their goals in the first half of last night’s 4-0 World Cup qualifying victory in Vaduz.

On Tuesday they welcome Germany to San Siro in a prestigious international friendly.

“Germany are at this moment a clearly stronger side than us and we cannot play the same way,” the Coach told reporters in his Press conference.

“They have a quality and organisation that goes way back, so it won’t be possible for us to approach it in this style. It’s not that I want to dent the team’s confidence, but Germany also had an extra day of rest.

“It would’ve been good to face a less strong opponent right now so we could build up some consistency.”

The 4-0 victory in Liechtenstein kept Italy in joint first place with Spain, albeit behind on goal difference, and was the first clean sheet of Ventura’s tenure.

“We have reinforced second place and are on the same level as Spain. The important thing was to win. Liechtenstein actually set their usual habits aside to make life more difficult for us.

“We have the potential to achieve something important, but not necessarily against Germany. There will be changes, especially as I don’t have a first choice XI as such.

“Marco Parolo and Matteo Darmian will definitely start, for example. The Germany game will be a celebration first and foremost, so will not be a key step in our journey.”

Ventura is taking the generational shift very seriously after Antonio Conte’s Azzurri reached the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

“In a little while the Nazionale will be in a position to win something important. I might not necessarily be there when it happens, but I will have contributed.”
