Palermo’s Franco Vazquez says representing Italy would be an honour for him – and it would make his mother proud too.

Argentinian by birth, the playmaker is eligible for the Azzurri through his mother, who is from Padua, and has been linked with a call up to Antonio Conte’s squad.

“I’ve always said that I’m half Italian,” Vazquez revealed in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport.

“My mother is from Padua, and many of my relatives live there, so for me it would be an honour [to play for Italy].

“My mum would be happy, but she left it for me to decide. It would be an honour. I met Conte at Boccadifalco [Palermo’s training ground], I think he’s one of the best Coaches in the world.

“You don’t with three Serie A titles in a row for nothing. He reminds me a lot of [Palermo Coach Beppe] Iachini, he wants to play a game based on intensity, quality and beautiful football.

“He can give you an incredible boost, just like our Coach. I think I’m more useful in attack, but if Conte asked me to play midfield it wouldn’t be a problem, I’ve done it for Palermo, I figure I could do it for the national team.”
