New signing Eduardo Vargas could make his Napoli debut in the Coppa Italia against Cesena, confirmed President Aurelio De Laurentiis.

The South American talent has been snapped up from Universidad de Chile for around €10m and will be eligible for the Champions League.

“A few hours ago we deposited his contract with the Lega, so Vargas is now ready to join us and will begin training with Walter Mazzarri over the weekend,” De Laurentiis told Radio Marte.

“Maybe the Chilean can take part in the Coppa Italia game against Cesena on January 12. We want to help him grow at his own pace and I tell our fans to support him at all times so he can get into gear. We must support him, like good parents.”

The President also confirmed Christian Maggio has extended his contract until 2015, while Marek Hamsik will sign a new deal soon.

However, he is increasingly irritated at the constant transfer gossip surrounding stars like Hamsik, Edinson Cavani and Ezequiel Lavezzi.

“The supposed offers pouring in for our champions are really becoming tiring. Nobody has asked me for anything.

“There’s a war going on between agents and they resort to these little games, throwing in the bait to see who bites. Napoli are a project and I always work in the long-term.

“Mazzarri’s job is to deal with the present and he interprets our philosophy in magnificent fashion. It’s fair to dream, but let us also not forget where we started from.”
