The Chilean talent was signed from Universidad de Chile for a reported €11.4m and his plane landed in Rome’s Fiumicino airport tonight.

He was greeted by over 100 fans who gave him a Napoli scarf and he spoke to journalists before beginning the car journey down to Naples.

“I am very happy to be joining a great club like Napoli and hope to give my best in this new adventure,” said the striker.

Fans asked whether he had already chosen his shirt number, but he said the decision had not been made, as his favoured 17 is already taken by Marek Hamsik.

Last week Vargas was voted runner-up behind Brazil star Neymar in the South American Player of the Year Awards.

He is expected to begin his first training session with Napoli on Friday.

There are more reasons for the Azzurri to celebrate, as today Hamsik’s wife Martina gave birth to their second son, Lucas.
