Vargas had been ready to play for Peru this week, but picked up a lesion to the right thigh muscle during training and has returned to Italy for more tests.

Meanwhile, Coach Ballardini kept supporters abreast of the situation regarding Marco Borriello, Sebastien Frey and Francelino Matuzalem.

“The last few days have been useful in the recovery process for players like Borriello, Frey and Matuzalem who are close to coming back to full training with the group,” he told the official club website.

“Thomas Manfredini and Ruben Olivera are also recovering from their injuries. Tactical training is complicated because so many are away on international duty, but everyone worked hard and stayed focused.

“I know that I have a group of professionals and the spirit of this team makes me optimistic for Genoa.”

They face a relegation showdown with Siena on Easter Saturday and Ballardini knows how important this result will be.

“We want to reach the Siena game with clear heads. There is no point putting more pressure on the build-up, as the importance of this match is clear for everyone and the pressure builds naturally.”
