Manchester United face Roma tonight and Louis Van Gaal will “wait and see” on target Kevin Strootman’s fitness.

The two clubs go head-to-head in Denver this evening for the Guinness International Champions Cup.

Despite Rudi Garcia making it crystal clear “Strootman is a Roma player and he’ll stay with us this season,” Van Gaal remains entirely open about wanting the Dutch midfielder.

“Strootman I can judge, but he is injured for more than six months,” said the former Netherlands Coach in a Press conference.

“We have to wait and see how he comes back. It is not easy to say how he comes back from injury, but we will wait and see.”

Strootman had snubbed Manchester United to join Roma from PSV Eindhoven last summer for £17m, but links with the club intensified after Van Gaal took over.

The 24-year-old suffered a serious knee ligament injury in March and therefore had to miss the World Cup, where his Oranje teammates finished third.

Garcia noted Strootman should start running soon in his rehabilitation process, but he is not in Denver to watch tonight’s game.

The midfielder remained behind in Boston so as to avoid unnecessary travelling – and more speculation of talks with Van Gaal.
