The 28-year-old had never even represented the Azzurri at junior level, but started in the Andrea Pirlo role in this evening’s 1-1 draw.

“I thank the Coach for his compliments and his faith in me for allowing me this start against a tough side like England.

“I worked well over the last 10 days and tried to put what the Coach asked on to the field. Before the game Conte said some nice things to relax me and made me aware of my capabilities.

“I received many messages from Empoli and know the city was there with me tonight, from the Coach to club directors, teammates and fans. I come from the provinces and it’s wonderful that someone like me was given an Italy debut.

“I know I’m here because of them and I want to share this wonderful joy with them.

“I always think of where I started from and maintain the utmost humility. I won’t deny I thought about that before kick-off and tried to give a good contribution to the team.

“Tonight I will enjoy this experience, then from tomorrow Coach Maurizio Sarri will be ready to put me back on track!”
