Udinese director Pierpaolo Marino insists ‘no club can accept’ a final Serie A table drawn up using an algorithm. ‘We support sporting merit.’

The algorithm is an option that all the major leagues will take into consideration if their season is forced to conclude early due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, 16 out of 20 Serie A clubs voted against it, arguing that they should instead freeze the Scudetto, promotion and relegation, essentially wiping off this season.

“Udinese support sporting merit,” director of sport Marino told Radio Sportiva.

“If the criteria for the standings were to be drawn up via arithmetic or algorithms, it would transform everything. A club cannot accept this decision. We hope the season can reach a conclusion on the field with clearly-defined tables.”

Marino is also concerned at the lack of clarity on extending loans and contracts beyond the natural deadline of June 30, as this extended season will go into August.

“It’s a general problem and the Federation ought to decide along with the clubs to automatically extend the deadlines to August. I fear there will be situations where an agreement cannot be found.”
