Ciro Ferrara named his players for the Azzurrini test to be played on Tuesday evening.
Among those missing are Milan talent El Shaarawy, who has been linked with a potential boost up to the senior Azzurri for Wednesday’s game with the USA.
His absence from the Under-21 side suggests this could well be the case, as Cesare Prandelli seeks adequate alternatives for Euro 2012.
However, Roma striker Borini had also been expected to get an Italy call, but is instead included in the Under-21 line-up.
Strangely, Juventus youth product Ciro Immobile is also left off the Under-21 side, but is unlikely to be promoted to the senior squad considering he plays in Serie B with Pescara.
Antonio Di Natale is currently out injured along with Alberto Gilardino, not to mention long-term absentees Antonio Cassano and Giuseppe Rossi.
