Belgium came very close to opening the scoring on 35 minutes when Ngoy’s cross took a massive deflection off Rolando Mandragora and looped up to bounce off the far post.
Vittorio Parigini blasted wide from 20 metres out, but Belgium got away with a very risky Vanheusden sliding tackle on Vido in the penalty area.
Belgium transformed their side at half-time and Genoa midfielder Stephane Omeonga drilled not far off target, as did Parigini when hitting the side-netting and firing just over the bar.
Parigini remained Italy’s most dangerous forward and had another shot smothered.
However, it was Belgium who broke through with substitute Francis Amuzu, as the Anderlecht talent cut inside from the left past Davide Calabria and curled a right-foot finish into the far top corner.
Atalanta midfielder Valzania was incredibly unlucky not to equalise in stoppages, as his angled drive bounced off the inside of the far post, went all along the line and back out.
