Fabio Liverani blamed “injuries” but conceded Lecce weren’t “ready for two competitions” as they crashed out of Coppa Italia with a 5-1 defeat to SPAL.

SPAL ran riot against Lecce on Wednesday, despite their lowly ranking in Serie A, and Liverani called for “aggression” and “attention” from his squad going forward.

“We had several injuries today,” he told reporters after the match.

“We were limited in terms of numbers. I knew I was facing a great deal of difficulties. The sorrow came in the first half.

“In the second, we gave them less opportunities and created a lot. The result is heavy, but it’s there because SPAL had a team that were ready for matches like this.

“We need to raise our attention levels, starting with the attackers and midfielders.

“We give too much away because we are lacking aggression. This allows quality players to always find a solution.”

Switching his attentions to Genoa this weekend, the coach claims the table is “lying” as the Grifone are stronger than their 18th place in Serie A suggests.

“It’s normal that at this moment we are not ready for two competitions, the League is already enough.

“Genoa are a quality team with great experience, and they are doing well. The table is lying for them.

Gianluca Lapadula has scored six goals for the Salentini this season, and Liverani admits the striker needs more help up front.

“Lapadula arrived on the first day of preseason and he saw that we needed him.

“We will help him with players who fit the bill. He knows it’s a season to fight for our survival.

“If we stay up, we will continue to improve the squad. We can’t bridge the gap right away."
