Benevento threatened a massive upset by taking the lead with a deflected Guilherme effort at the Stadio Olimpico.

Federico Fazio’s free header from a set play made it 1-1 going into the break, but 20-year-old Turkish talent Cengiz Under took centre stage in the second half.

First he whipped in a splendid cross for the head of Edin Dzeko, then bagged a brace, including his sensational left-foot curler from outside the area.

Bottom of the table Benevento didn’t give in and, with Bacary Sagna making his debut, Enrico Brignola tapped in Cristiano Lombardi’s assist for 4-2.

There was still time for a handling offence in the box and Dzeko generously handed it to Gregoire Defrel to break his Roma duck.
