Giovanni Trapattoni predicts Luciano Spalletti will do well on his Roma return – “he knows the club, and that’s important”.

The Coach is set to return to the Giallorossi after the dismissal of Rudi Garcia, with only an official announcement to come.

“Spalletti knows the environment, and that’s important,” Trapattoni explained to Calciomercato.

“The experience he’s gained abroad will have enriched him, because that’s a very important part of a Coach’s career which allows you to discover the diverse nature of players.

“Without being presumptuous, I think Italian Coaches always have an advantage in carrying out certain projects.

“I rate Spalletti very highly, on the level of [Fabio] Capello, [Roberto] Mancini and [Cesare] Prandelli so his return could be important.”

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini revealed yesterday that he had offered Il Trap the chance to take over from him, and the former Juventus Coach admits the prospect is intriguing.

“Well, the door isn’t closed, maybe we can talk about that. Right now I’m holding back a bit from that kind of commitment, though I must admit I’ve thought about it.

“Being able to work with Zamparini like [Giampiero] Boniperti [at Juventus] would be something I’d like, as well as playing a role in an important city like Palermo which has always fascinated me.

“Guillermo Barros Schelotto? I think Zamparini has proven over the years that he has a sixth sense, both for players and Coaches.

“I think that Schelotto will have the skills for the President to trust in his competence, a bit like [Erick] Thohir at Inter with Mancini.”
