Giovanni Trapattoni has hit back at referee Byron Moreno for calling him a ‘coward’. “Prison doesn’t seem to have given you an ounce of humility.”
Moreno was the referee who controversially oversaw Italy’s 2-1 defeat to South Korea at the 2002 World Cup, having sent off Francesco Totti and disallowed a perfectly-legitimate Azzurri equaliser.

He recently defended his performance in that game and called out then-CT Trapattoni, who gave his own assessment of the Ecuadorian.
“To be called a coward by Moreno, I missed it! What can I say?” tweeted the 80-year-old.
“I, on the other hand, consider him very brave (or mad) for having gone back to defend that piece of refereeing.
“Dear Byron, prison and time don’t seem to have given you an ounce of humility.”
