Giovanni Trapattoni is “mad” about Lorenzo Insigne and tips Gian Piero Gasperini as the next Italy Coach.

Napoli talent Insigne had only been called up once for the Italy squad under Antonio Conte and pulled out with a knee injury.

He got his first cap since the 2014 World Cup and scored in a 1-1 friendly draw with Spain on Thursday.

“Insigne is a real scugnizzo (Neapolitan street brat, ndr) who drives me mad,” Trapattoni told Il Mattino newspaper.

“He is a young lad full of creativity, confidence and character. I saw that he had no hesitation in picking up the ball for a free kick.

“I must say he confirmed with the Nazionale all the good work he is doing at Napoli. If there were some misunderstandings with Conte, it’s only right they have spoken and cleared the air.”

Conte has already announced he will leave the Azzurri after Euro 2016, so who would former Italy boss Trap pick as his heir?

“I’d see Gasperini doing well. He is proving all his quality at Genoa, is professional, well-prepared. He has the right CV and is probably the man who could best suit this role.”
