Veteran Italian tactician Giovanni Trapattoni has signed a new contract with the Republic of Ireland.

Trap, now 72, has extended his stay with the national side which means he – and assistants Marco Tardelli and Fausto Rossi – will still be in charge of their 2014 World Cup bid.

“Marco and I believe very strongly in the work that we are doing to grow and develop the Irish team,” Trapattoni, a Scudetto winner with Juventus” data-scaytid=”6″>Juventus and Inter, noted.

“It is a huge honour and privilege to represent the Irish team and we look forward to continuing.”

Trapattoni took charge of the Republic in 2008 and he recently masterminded their qualification for next summer’s Euro 2012.

There will be three Italian tacticians in Ukraine and Poland next summer – Trap, Italy boss Cesare Prandelli and England’s Fabio Capello.
