Francesco Totti shoulders the blame for missing a penalty despite making up for it with a brace on his 500th Serie A appearance for Roma.

“The result was my fault and I shouldn’t have got the penalty saved,” said the captain of a 2-2 draw with Catania.

“It’s a point that feels quite useless. Unfortunately we were unable to win and I think my penalty was decisive. I take full responsibility as captain.

“As for the goals conceded, those are down to everyone, because when the defence is exposed it’s because the strikers aren’t coming back to press the ball. We must remain united to overcome these moments.”

It was Totti’s 500th Serie A match with his 215th goal, so he was asked what Roma would do without him.

“They’d be a team, just like all teams. I am merely a player who is part of this squad and trying to achieve an important result for this season. Unfortunately, today’s draw doesn’t help.”

It’s now entirely possible Roma won’t qualify for Europe at all, which would make it very difficult for Luis Enrique to stay.

“I hope he will remain. In my view Luis Enrique is a great Coach and we need to give him time. In their first year almost everyone got it wrong at Roma.

“The team is behind him completely and he gives his all. I hope he can stay, as he has a great future ahead of him.”
