The Uruguay international made his name at Sampdoria and earned a move to Arsenal over the summer, but had been in advanced talks with their next Europa League opponents Napoli.

“It’s true, Lucas was very close to Napoli. There were negotiations with Napoli, but something strange happened, and you know in the transfer market things can change from one moment to the next,” Ricardo Torreira told Radio Marte.

“Negotiations are long and complicated processes, so it can happen than they don’t go the way we expected. There was this opportunity to go to England and Lucas took it, so I have to say he is happy at Arsenal.

“Obviously, Lucas is very fond of Italian football, where he grew up, and might return to Italy in future. You can never say never, so it’s possible he could come back to this marvellous country and, why not to Napoli or another club that makes an offer?”

Torreira will be at the Stadio San Paolo for the second leg of their Europa League quarter-finals.

“It’ll be a wonderful clash. Napoli are very strong and deserved to go through, while Arsenal struggled, but in the end qualified deservedly.

“Both sides would deserve to continue the Europa League adventure, so it’s a pity that one of them has to go out. There are no favourites in this tie, as both will have to worry about the atmosphere in the away leg.”
