Verona striker Luca Toni isn’t ruling out an Italy return for the European Championships – “we’ll see…”

The 38-year-old won the World Cup with the Azzurri in 2006, hitting 16 goals in his 47 caps for his country, but hasn’t pulled on the blue shirt since a World Cup 2010 qualifier against Georgia.

“The national team?” Toni considered, speaking to Sky.

“The greatest hope is to secure safety for Verona, then we’ll see. Clearly if I don’t go then I’ll be cheering for the national team.”

Verona haven’t won a single game in Serie A so far this season, but the veteran still believes they can stay up.

“We have so much enthusiasm, we have to try and save ourselves. Let’s see if other players will come in to try and help us out.

“Unfortunately, as well as my absence there were a lot of injuries. We have five months to recover. I believe, as everyone at Verona does.”

Toni will be 39 in May, and has already announced that he will hang up his boots at the end of the season.
