Luca Toni calls Germany “a strong team” but “they’re favourites whenever they meet Italy and we have always beaten them…”

The Azzurri face Joachim Löw’s side on Saturday in the Euro 2016 Quarter-Final, having never lost to the Germans in a competitive match.

“They’re a strong team,” Toni, who was part of the side which defeated Germany in the 2006 World Cup semi-final, acknowledged to Premium Sport.

“They’re a strong team,” Toni, who was part of the side which defeated Germany in the 2006 World Cup semi-final, acknowledged to Premium Sport.

“But overtime they’ve met Italy they’ve been favourites and we have always beaten them. They know that, and if it happened again it would be a trauma.

“With [Marcello] Lippi [in 2006] everyone took us for losers but we always believed in victory.

“Conte also started quietly but made it clear to the lads that they have the chance of winning the European Championships and making history.”
