Lorenzo Tonelli believes Napoli are performing “a minor miracle” with their Scudetto challenge.

The Partenopei sit two points behind Juventus at the top of Serie A, and can return to the top of the table, at least temporarily, with a win at Sassuolo on Saturday evening.

“There are 50 days and nine cup finals left,” Tonelli said on Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli.

“We have to win them all, or almost all of them. It will be beautiful, it will be exciting. We’re playing for a piece of history and we’re ready for it.

“The Coach [Maurizio Sarri] always repeats that Juve are more organised, have more money, we’re not obliged to win like the Bianconeri are. We’re performing a minor miracle.

“We’ve built something solid, whatever comes later everything will have been earned. We’re there, we have to fight to the last punch. This time we can fight to the end, and not go to the canvas early.

“We lost points against Chievo, in football there is nothing obvious and for this reason every game has to be treated like a cup final.

“The game in Turin? We’re taking it a game at a time, we’re only focused on Sassuolo.

“We know very well that on paper they have a more difficult run-in than us, but we saw against Spal that anything can happen. We can’t take the fixture list into account.”

Napoli haven’t won the Scudetto since the days of Diego Maradona, can they feel Naples willing them on?

“Obviously. The only complaint I could make is that if we had a more compact stadium, without the running track… imagine a San Paolo with 40-50,000 people five or six metres away, what a bear pit that would be?

“With their shouting, people could change the trajectory of the ball.”

The centre-back was also asked about his idols and opponents, starting with the man who made him fall in love with defending.

“Fabio Cannavaro, I really love him,” Tonelli said.

“I’m not someone who sees a famous footballer and asks for photos, but as soon as I saw Fabio my heart started beating like a little kid.

“The hardest striker to mark? Carlos Tevez, mamma mia! It was impossible.”
