Sandro Tonali was the key man in Milan’s edgy 2-1 win over Hellas Verona yesterday, earning praise from the Italian press.

The Rossoneri took an early lead in the match thanks to an early own goal from Miguel Veloso, before Koray Gunter netted the equaliser around 10 minutes later. The two sides jostled for an advantage for the rest of the clash and Milan eventually came out ahead thanks to Tonali, who scored the winning goal with only nine minutes left on the clock.

La Gazzetta dello Sport highlighted Tonali’s dominant performance in the match, feeling that “he stole the keys to the city from Tommasi, who knows life as a mediano.” Corriere dello Sport agreed with this assessment, adding “more than once he had to contend with Verdi, who is always a tricky customer. Like last year, he condemned Verona to defeat.”

Tuttosport believed Tonali was the protagonist of the clash, underlining the difficult nature of the match and the hard work of the Italian midfielder, calling it “a game of suffering against Verona, illuminated by the ‘usual’ goal, the third in two seasons, which came with a masterful percussion.”

The 22-year-old Tonali has made 13 appearances across all competitions so far this season, for a total of 1084 minutes. In that time, he’s scored one goal and provided one assist.
