Sandro Tonali’s agent admits it was ‘not easy at the start to explain the project’ at Newcastle United, but he understood the sale was best for Milan too.

The midfielder has agreed a transfer to St James Park for €80m including add-ons, bonuses and a percentage of the sell-on fee.

Now that the European Under-21 Championship has ended for Italy, he should be announced by Newcastle over the weekend.

“It was not easy at the start to explain the project, but he is intelligent and understood straight away,” agent Beppe Riso told Sportitalia.

“We found the best solution for everyone, for Milan and for Sandro, as he is going to have an experience in the NBA of football.”

He is referring to the Premier League as the equivalent in this sport of the National Basketball Association.

Tonali is a lifelong Milan supporter and had said many times he wanted to stay at San Siro for life.

However, the Rossoneri reached an agreement to sell him for a huge fee and it became difficult to resist that pressure.

The player will also receive a massive wage boost and the Magpies have qualified for the Champions League after strong investment from the club’s Saudi owners.
