"I cheer for the youngsters, I even retired ahead of schedule to make room for those younger than me," the former Fiorentina goalkeeper told Radio Rai.

"Donnarumma has a great interpretation of the goalkeeping role, he’s a player that I like.

"Buffon knows what he wants, he knows even more so if he is already at the peak of his performances. He’s tried to improve not only on the pitch but also in front of the TV cameras.

"He wants to win what he lacks, his retirement depends on him and it's something that he will feel inside.

"Buffon may give advice to Donnarumma but he also jealously guards his position, the national team depends on Gigi Buffon and his choices have to be endorsed.

"If Donnarumma has the space he deserves, it will mean that Buffon has left him with it voluntarily.

"Gigio always seems like he’s playing in a field with friends, has the right lightheartedness to play in Serie A.

"The character of a goalkeeper is formed at mid-career, but he already has the right dimensions, and has had the good fortune to hear his Coach give him so much confidence."
