Inter President Erick Thohir has confirmed that the club has retired Javier Zanetti’s legendary No.4 shirt.

The Argentine defender called time on his playing career this summer after an amazing 19-year spell at San Siro, representing the Nerazzurri over 600 times in Serie A.

And the Indonesian tycoon has revealed that the No.4 will no longer be available to players, and also admitted that Zanetti is to be Vice-President for the next two years.

“Zanetti will be the new Vice-President of the club, and has signed a two-year contract,” he told reporters.

“The entire board has also agreed on the decision to retire his No.4 jersey.”

Thohir then went on to comment on his recent meeting with the rest of the Inter board, and possible transfer comings and goings.

“Today we talked about the budget in reference to the Financial Fair Play which is coming in to view.

“As we are playing in the Europa League, and in the future will be in the Champions League, we are obliged to comply with these regulations.

“We talked about marketing and developing some new international sponsors as well – because as I’ve said before, to compete with other big teams we have to have significant new revenue streams.

“The market in Italy opens in two weeks’ time, and for me, this is the first time experiencing it – so I don’t really want to comment on specific names.

“But I can say that we know Atletico Madrid were interested in Mauro Icardi and Samir Handanovic, but we’ve decided to keep them both.”
