The Nerazzurri patron met with his opposite number at Milan, Silvio Berlusconi, this week to discuss plans for the ground, with the Rossoneri abandoning a plan for their own stadium.

“First of all, it was an opportunity to get to know each other,” Thohir explained in an interview with Tuttosport.

“Regarding San Siro, we’ve been working on an Inter stadium for the past seven months, based on what Milan were previously saying.

“A few weeks ago President Berlusconi officially stated that they want to stay at San Siro, so we discussed it and we’ll return to it in the future.

“The Champions League final will be here in 2016, so we’re doubly lucky, because with that even in the stadium a lot of improvements will already have been made.

“It’s not enough though. So if we really want to work together, we really have to come to an agreement together, and decide on a timeline for work to be done to make it a more modern stadium.

“It would be great to stay at a stadium with 80,000 fans, but our average this season is 54,000 per game [having played Juventus and Milan already], so we’ll have to study the numbers and see what would be a better capacity for the stadium.

“We’ve done several studies, but it also depends on the council.

“Having an 80,000-seater stadium is great, when you open a new metro stop as they’ve done, excellent, but we also have to improve the parking spaces, as there just aren’t enough.

“It’s one thing to build a stadium, but the infrastructure around it is also important.”
