Inter President Erick Thohir says Manchester United target Ivan Perisic “is still our player” but admits “we don’t know the next step”.

The Red Devils have been trying to sign the winger all summer, but so far they have refused to meet the Nerazzurri’s €55m asking price.

“The Croat is still our player,” Thohir said from the Beneamata’s training camp.

“He plays and trains with us. We don’t know the next step.”

Thohir was also asked why Inter, and majority owners Suning Group, haven’t bought big stars so far this summer.

“Because they’re already in the team! We already have so many. We’re ready to work, but it depends on what [Coach] Luciano Spalletti wants.

“We’ve taken Milan Skriniar and sold Marco Andreolli, sold Ever Banega and brought Borja Valero. To balance the team, first we have to sell players and then buy others.

“Milan’s spending? It’s due to the fact they have a new investor, but when Suning came in last year they also bought five big players, namely Geoffrey Kondogbia, Eder, Joao Mario, Gabigol and Antonio Candreva [Kondogbia and Eder actually arrived before Suning].

“Do not compare Inter to Milan, because in the coming season we’ll be solely focused on Serie A. When you have 22 or 23 players, that’s pretty good for the league.”
