New Spezia coach Thiago Motta assures he is ‘the right man in the right place at the right time’ to build on Vincenzo Italiano’s success.

The Aquile were promoted to Serie A for the first time in their history and Italiano kept them in the top flight before leaving for a new experience at Fiorentina.

“I am the right man in the right place at the right time,” said Thiago Motta.

This is only his second real coaching role after 10 games at Genoa in 2019, before that only leading the PSG youth team.

“I wanted to get back to coaching, but not necessarily in Italy. I was convinced by the directors, as we shared the same vision. I am convinced this was the right thing to do.

“Italiano played a very positive and attacking style of football in which he tried to take the initiative, as that is what represents the history of this club.

“It is an interesting challenge that I take on with great responsibility. We’ve talked the transfer strategy over, we agree on what is needed and are working to raise the bar.”

Thiago Motta has signed a three-year contract with Spezia, suggesting he wants to create a genuine long-term project at the club.

He confirmed that he wants to keep hold of the best players, specifically naming defender Martin Erlic as one of those he intends to retain.

“I am here to bring something to the fans and I want them to know we are always working for what is best for the team and the club.”
