Bologna coach Thiago Motta insists it is ‘not a fluke’ if Marko Arnautovic is the current top scorer in Serie A and celebrates his first victory.

The Rossoblu had only won one match all season in the league and managed just one point from four games since Thiago Motta took over from Sinisa Mihajlovic.

However, they comfortably saw off Lecce 2-0 at the Stadio Dall’Ara with an Arnautovic penalty and Lewis Ferguson header.

“I am happy with what we showed over the 90-95 minutes. We were always in control, this is the right path, we just need to improve and you can see the margins for improvement,” Thiago Motta told DAZN.

“It’s difficult to do well in modern football without intensity, because all the teams study the opposition characteristics. With intensity, we were able to create the scoring opportunities today and get into the penalty area, but we can do much better when in possession.”

Arnautovic returned from injury after missing the 3-2 loss at Napoli with a back problem and immediately made his mark, converting a penalty.

That was his seventh Serie A goal of the season, making the Austrian veteran – and former Manchester United transfer target – the current Capocannoniere.

“Marko is in good shape, I’ve known him for a long time and that is why I admire him so much. He is an exceptional guy, who can make all the difference when using his energy and physicality to attack the space.

“He is the Capocannoniere in Serie A and that is not a fluke.”

The 33-year-old Austria international now has seven goals in just 10 Serie A appearances this season.

Including last term, Arnautovic found the net 21 times in 43 Serie A games wearing the Bologna jersey.
