FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio knows FIFA must “regain credibility after a year of humiliation”.

Gianni Infantino was elected as the new President of world football’s governing body today, replacing Sepp Blatter who stood down amidst a raft of scandals.

Tavecchio had backed UEFA chief Michel Platini to succeed Blatter, but he has also received a suspension for non-disclosure of a payment.

“He’s won for European football, but he has world football in his DNA too,” Tavecchio said of Infantino after the emergency congress.

“I hope the new President can do a good job, to drive FIFA into a new era. We must regain credibility after a year of humiliation.

“Football isn’t what it has been portrayed as in recent months. The football world needs to continue down the path of reform started today, and Italy is available to contribute to this renewal which everyone wants.

“It went the way it should have. Now we have to help the weakest federations catch up with the leading ones.”
