Italian Football Federation President Carlo Tavecchio says first impressions confirm Antonio Conte’s appointment has been the right one.

Tavecchio was elected on August 11 and just three days later Conte was unveiled as the new national team Coach.

The first 83 days of Tavecchio’s mandate have started well under Conte’s stewardship who, according to the FIGC President, is an all-round professional.

“We gave Conte the duty to preside over every activity within the Italian FA from the first team to the last,” Tavecchio told Radio Crc today.

“He is really accurate, knowledgeable and determined. He’s actually taking us back to a concept of self-consistency which we thought we had lost.

“I think that we should give him time to see the results but in the end he has already achieved four wins after four games in charge and he is also touring Italy, even doing some scouting, so I think that we have made the right choice.”

Tavecchio adds that the FIGC is investing a lot in youth, trying to emulate the success of Germany.

“We should have confidence in youngsters because we have 1.2m members, 700,000 of whom are Under-18. This means that there is an ocean of youngsters to select from.

“We are investing in academies and, as part of our strategy, through Lega Dilettanti [Non-League] we have moved a training centre that might serve as a benchmark in every region, just like they did in Germany.

“Obviously there should be rules that protect Italian youngsters because if from abroad a lot of players without a curriculum come in, then we can become a no man’s land.

“In England for instance, there is a rule that asks players to have a specific Curriculum in order to play at professional level.”
