FIGC President Carlo Tavecchio said Antonio Conte is “proving himself to be a real commander” for Italy at Euro 2016.

The Azzurri begin their tournament tomorrow evening against Belgium in Lyon.

“We are very happy with the training camp in Montpellier, as it is the ideal venue to ensure we are ready and fired up for this challenge,” Tavecchio told Sky Sport Italia.

“Conte is concentrated and proving himself to be a real commander. We want to win against Belgium. We were unlucky with the draw, as they are very strong, but we’ve seen the other big teams have struggled so far.”

Euro 2016 has been beset by clashes between fans in Marseille and Nice, above all with English, Russian and French hooligans facing off.

“The events are shameful and we need to reduce the sale of alcohol around games,” continued Tavecchio.

“The French authorities are up to the task and will be able to defend the legality of the tournament. Unfortunately, the tension within and between countries is then reflected in this type of competition.”
