Lazio director Igli Tare is not concerned after a disastrous pre-season put pressure on Vladimir Petkovic. “This is a good squad, though it can be improved.”

The Biancocelesti were jeered by their own fans in the Stadio Olimpico debut, a 1-0 friendly defeat to Getafe that followed on from losses to Torino and Siena.

See Scott Fleming's blog on the pressure that is building on Coach Petkovic.

“I believe that the difference between us and the teams that are now being praised for their transfer strategy is that these sides have in recent years always finished behind us,” Tare told lalaziosiamonoi.it.

“I am convinced that this is a good Lazio squad, which of course doesn’t take away the fact the club knows it has to make some adjustments.

“The team can be improved in the right way. We mustn’t buy players just to make up the numbers.

“We must make changes to improve the side in terms of characteristics. Unfortunately in this market there are some negotiations that end well and others that don’t, but that doesn’t take away from the fact much of the criticism aimed at Lazio has been unfair.”

The Biancocelesti continue talks for Genoa’s Andreas Granqvist and Sporting’s Brazilian Xandao, both centre-backs.

“I never said Xandao was an alternative to Granqvist. I simply said he could be, but at the moment we’re not discussing him,” insisted Tare.

“Lazio are evaluating all the situations. We’ll see what happens.”
