Marco Tardelli believes former club Juventus needed to buy another midfielder and defender in the summer transfer market.

Although impressed by the club’s mercato moves, the Republic of Ireland assistant boss thinks there are holes in their squad.

“I think the signings have been good,” the 58-year-old told Tuttosport. “Carlos Tevez, as the Argentine’s impact on Italian football shows, is a high level buy.

“I’ve seen Mirko Vucinic improve with Tevez by his side. I’d also give the signing of Angelo Ogbonna a high mark, I’ve always liked him.

“However, they are missing a midfielder and a centre-back,” he added. “There is a lot of talk about the midfield, but, in my opinion, they are a man short at the back too.

“I hope Giorgio Chiellini can have an injury-free season, even if historically he is someone who visits the treatment room.”

Juventus did make a deadline day bid to sign Radja Nainggolan from Cagliari” data-scaytid=”18″>Cagliari, but the Sardinian club refused to sell.

“Nainggolan is a good player, but if the Belgian’s asking price is €18m then there are plenty of good midfielders around Europe at that price,” added Tardelli. “I won’t name anyone in particular, but €18m is a lot of money.”

Turning to Juventus’ Champions League prospects, Tardelli believed the Old Lady can take on Real Madrid after being paired in the same group.

“Juventus are not inferior to Real. Only Barcelona, and not by much, have more quality in their squad than Juve. I don’t see Bayern Munich as superior either.”

Tardelli spent a decade in the Juventus midfield before his 1985 switch to Inter.
