Wojciech Szczesny has released a statement confirming his refusal to play against Russia in Poland’s upcoming 2022 World Cup play-off.
The Polish national team announced this morning that they had no plan on playing Russia following the recent invasion of Ukraine. The decision has been backed by the players, with stars like Robert Lewandowski and now Szczesny coming out in support of the move.
Talks are now ongoing with Sweden and the Czech Republic, the other two teams involved in that World Cup play-off bracket. Updates regarding this situation are expected in the coming days.
Szczesny released a statement on his Instagram page supporting the decision made by the Polish FA, commenting on his personal ties to Ukraine and his unhappiness at the idea of playing Russia. The 31-year-old has made 62 caps for Poland, taking part in three European Championships and one World Cup.
Below is Szczesny’s statement in full:
“My wife was born in Ukraine, there is Ukrainian blood running through the veins of my son, part of our family is still in Ukraine, a lot of my workers are Ukrainian and they’re all great people.
“Seeing the suffering on their faces and fear for their country makes me realise I can’t stand still and pretend that nothing has happened.
“The moment Putin decided to invade Ukraine he declared war not only on Ukraine but also on all the values Europe stands for. Liberty, Independence but most of all Peace.
“On 26th of March we were supposed to play against Russia in a play-off match for 2022 World Cup in Qatar. And although my heart breaks while writing this, my conscience will not let me play.
“Representing your country is the biggest honour in a footballers career but its still a choice. I refuse to play against players who choose to represent the values and principles of Russia!
“I refuse to stand on the pitch, wearing the colours of my country and listen to the national anthem of Russia! I refuse to take part in a sporting even that legitimises the actions of the Russian government.
“I know my impact may only be symbolic but I call on FIFA and UEFA to take action and hold Russian federation accountable for their actions.”

Well said and I hope all the players expected to be involved in playing against Russia have similar sentiments.
Remember though: UEFA doesn’t make political statements… And I remind everyone of this irony because if UEFA had made political responses every time, rather than shying away from certain ones, they wouldn’t stand as hypocrites in such critical times as this war upon Ukraine.

Personally I agree with FIFA/UEFA that football is beyond political protest on-field, but I certainly feel they should immediately shelve any plans of holding competitions in Russia, including the final in St. Petersburg.
Swift and immediate bans on all games in Russia is a minimum – Israeli teams have played many a ‘home-game’ in Cyprus for similar reasons.
Acts of war is not in line with what football is about.
If Russia is removed from the competition don’t they then have to redo the whole playoffs draws
