The Liverpool goalscorer had knee surgery 10 days ago, but was seen back working with physios on Monday going through his initial recovery.

Centre back Diego Godin told reporters: “If you saw him with trousers on you wouldn’t know he’s had surgery.”

But the indications in South America are that the 27-year-old will sit out the Celestes’ first match of the tournament on June 14.

Uruguay play Costa Rica in Fortaleza in 12 days’ time, but several outlets believe that Suarez will not be risked for that clash – and instead will be given time to prove his fitness ahead of the game with England on June 19.

Italy are the last team to go up against Oscar Tabarez’s outfit, facing each other in Natal on June 24.
