He was all set to be one of their top players for the tournament, where they’ll face Italy, England and Costa Rica.

Suarez sustained an injury during the last game of the Premier League season with Liverpool and required meniscus surgery.

“This morning he underwent keyhole surgery for a lesion to the meniscus ligament and no other lesions were found,” read a statement from the Uruguay medical staff.

“Suarez’s participation in the World Cup is not ruled out.”

The 27-year-old will miss the warm-up games against Northern Ireland and Slovenia on May 30 and June 4.
