While some clubs try to organise new training sessions, the union of sports medics invites its 4,000 members to volunteer at hospitals during the coronavirus pandemic.

The death toll in Italy has now surpassed that of China with 3,405 people succumbing to the viral illness in the peninsula.

That includes several doctors and the system is at breaking point, particularly in the hardest-hit Lombardy region.

The death toll in Italy has now surpassed that of China with 3,405 people succumbing to the viral illness in the peninsula.

That includes several doctors and the system is at breaking point, particularly in the hardest-hit Lombardy region.

A statement from the FMSI (Federation of Italian Sporting Medics) invited its 4,000 members to volunteer at local hospitals and “give your contribution to the country by offering your services.

“As medics, even before we are sporting medics, we must think of this national emergency. With great responsibility, we see retired doctors come back to help out and are sending newly-qualified youngsters to the front lines.

“We cannot hold back!”

The medics have also made clear they oppose attempts by clubs such as Lazio, Brescia and Cagliari to resume training during the pandemic.
