Igli Tare, who has been Lazio’s sporting director since July 2008, has announced his departure from the club.

The former centre forward initially joined the Biancocelesti as a player in 2005 and spent three years playing for the club before hanging up his boots and moving into the management, being appointed as their sporting director.

Tare had a number of ups and downs during his time in Lazio’s management, pulling off impressive deals like the arrivals of Luis Alberto, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile. In recent years, however, faith started to wane in the Albanian, with investments like the €20m spent on Vedat Muriqi or €10m on Denis Vavro not paying off.

Speaking to TG1 via La Gazzetta dello Sport today, Tare announced his departure from Lazio, saying: “I’m leaving after 18 years, it was an intense adventure. I carry everything in my heart.”

Coach Maurizio Sarri, who guided Lazio to a second place finish and Champions League qualification this season, never saw eye to eye with the Albanian sporting director and tensions between them threatened his future at the club.
