Danilo D’Ambrosio’s late goal secured a fifth win in six matches for Inter to consolidate third place in Serie A, but while Spalletti was pleased with the result, he made it clear the Nerazzurri were still a work in progress.

“They were very good at shutting us out and coming back out,” the Coach said after the game.

“They forced us to win via a set-piece, but these situations for us show we’re an intense team, and I’m happy with that.

“We believed, but we have to do more in the final third. We need more individual quality.

“Perisic and Candreva know how to beat their man, but we can do better and move the ball quicker.

“Still, we were always organised and only suffered a bit. What rating do I give Inter? One high enough because we won.

“Let’s say around six as not giving in to your opponents is an important quality. I want to do better than what I’m doing, I have to do better and we haven’t peaked yet. We still need more creativity, but we had a good match.

“Mauro sometimes has to come shorter to get in behind his marker and create space for his teammates, but at other times we have to find him better and trust his ability as a ‘bomber’ in the penalty area.

“Did you see his recovery in our box? He preserved the result, it was like he scored a goal!

“Juve and Napoli? We must recreate a winning mentality. There’s still a bit of a gap between us and them.

“Whistles at Candreva? Our fans demanding, but this can be a stimulus for him. The Inter fans love us regardless.

“I told D’Ambrosio to be careful about Genoa coming back at us, but then he scored. I’ll grant him more [freedom] next time…”
