Luciano Spalletti confirmed the Coppa Italia “is certainly an objective” for Inter and they learned not to underestimate Benevento.

The Round of 16 kicks off at San Siro on Sunday at 17.00 GMT and the winners will go on to face Lazio in the quarter-final.

“As we saw last year, these games can hold hidden dangers, but the team is focused and learned from that experience,” the Coach told Inter TV.

“We have a stronger mentality now and will try to improve it further in this match. Benevento boss Cristian Bucchi has experience now and is very good at setting his team out, so his type of side can cause problems.

“We also saw in Cup competitions in England and France that big clubs can be surprised by minnows. Benevento eliminated Udinese in order to get here, so in one-off matches, the gap between teams can be wiped out.”

Inter don’t have home advantage either, because it will be played behind closed doors due to repeated racist chanting from their fans.

“It’ll seem a lot more like a training ground exercise, as without the crowd there, we lose the passion and emotional strength this sport gives you.

“It was right to send a strong message, but also to reflect on what can be done, because we end up penalising people who have nothing to do with these incidents.”

With Inter out of the Champions League in the group stage, can the Coppa Italia be their best chance of silverware?

“It is certainly an objective. This is probably the simplest to achieve, because there are fewer games on the way to the Final. Big clubs take part and it’ll be tough, but a side like Inter must aim for victory.”

Inter squad for Benevento: Handanovic, Padelli, Berni, Vrsaljko, De Vrij, Ranocchia, Asamoah, Miranda, Dalbert, D’Ambrosio, Skriniar, Gagliardini, Vecino, Nainggolan, Joao Mario, Borja Valero, Perisic, Brozovic, Icardi, Lautaro Martinez, Keita Balde, Politano, Candreva
