Inter Coach Luciano Spalletti was ‘the best possible choice’ to succeed Stefano Pioli, according to club legend Diego Milito.
The Nerazzurri sacked former boss Pioli shortly before the end last season after an underwhelming Serie A season.
The likes of Antonio Conte and Diego Simeone were both heavily linked with replacing the now-Fiorentina Coach, but in the end Inter appointed ex-Roma tactician Spalletti.
And speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Argentine Milito expressed his belief that the move will prove to be an inspired choice.
“Spalletti was a great choice, the best possible,” the Champions League winner commented.
“His career and results at all the clubs he has worked at speak for themselves.
“Even before I knew him personally, I knew he was one of the best around because facing one of his teams was never easy.
“This summer, after having been in China with Inter, I was able to see first hand how good he is.
“He is extremely prepared on the pitch and from a psychological point of view he has done brilliantly to quickly revive a group who had a bad season last year.”
Spalletti has guided Inter to 16 points from their opening six Serie A matches of the season, meaning they are just two behind early pace-setters Juventus and Napoli.
Though the Nerazzurri have at times been unconvincing in their victories, Milito believes there is a lot more to come.
“There certainly is a big margin for improvement because some new players have arrived and more than anything, there has been a change of Coach.
“Not even three months ago, this group still didn’t exist and Spalletti still hadn’t started his work.
“It is right to give the Coach the time to shape the team. Up until now, the results have been very good, probably better than a lot of people’s expectations.
“They are a solid and balanced team. You don’t start the way they have in the League if you don’t have a good foundation and a great Coach.
“I think the directors have made intelligent buys. There are also some notable prospects like Skriniar, but Spalletti has impressed me with his way of working.
“Having someone like that in the dugout gives you a great push and enables you to go into any game with confidence and optimism."
Milito added that despite Inter’s fine start, returning to the Champions League should remain the club’s main target for the season ahead.
“I’d prefer to talk about the primary target, which is to return to the Champions League – a competition in which Inter can’t not participate given their history and tradition.
“When you put on the Inter shirt, you need to always try to win.”
