SPAL Coach Leonardo Semplici took responsibility for their Coppa Italia exit to Serie B outfit Cittadella, but President Walter Mattioli was furious with the squad.

The Spallini were knocked out with a 2-0 home defeat this evening, sending Cittadella through to face Lazio in the Round of 16.

“It was a bad performance, that goes beyond giving Cittadella credit, and the responsibility is only mine,” said Coach Semplici in his Press conference.

“It was a bad performance, that goes beyond giving Cittadella credit, and the responsibility is only mine,” said Coach Semplici in his Press conference.

“We really wanted to win and I gave space to those who hadn’t featured as much, but they wasted this opportunity. Perhaps I didn’t express the right message to the lads.”

President Mattioli was much harsher on the SPAL squad following this embarrassing setback.

“I saw a team of arrogant players who at the start of the game looked as if they didn’t want to be there and that irritated me. They played without balls and I expected a very different match.

“We need everyone to press the reset button and forget what happened last season. As for those who just arrived, they must prove themselves worthy of this shirt.”
