The coronavirus outbreak has caused controversy in Serie A with Presidents and Ministers involved in public discussions about the decisions made by the government.

After several meetings, the initial decision was to carry out the League matches in Italy behind closed doors, before they ended up suspending the games completely.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has since put the whole country in a lockdown and the Minister of Sport Spadafora hits out at football in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Hour after hour, we are facing an extraordinary emergency and the scenario can change and require new decisions,” Spadafora told the newspaper. “Precisely for this reason, I was perplexed in the face of the controversy of the last few days.

“We have taken on our responsibilities, registered the great inability of football to decide. I would like to say that everything is clearer to me now. The rules have nothing to do with it.

“The DPCM was used to protect the League and Sky for the risk of compensation. One of the two would lose. Just a matter of money. And I won’t talk about the messages I have received, from the President’s that first insulted me to let them play the games, for then to ask me to close everything down.

“The first thing I want to say, is that the decisions regarding the whole country will obviously have its implications for sport and football. At all levels.”
