Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora confirms ‘we should be able to see fans in the stadiums come September’ with COVID-19 social distancing measures.

The Serie A, B and Coppa Italia matches have all been played behind closed doors since the lockdown in early March and return to the field in June.

“If the epidemiological curve allows, we should be able to see fans in the stadiums come September,” Spadafora told Radio Rai.

“Obviously, we won’t be able to fill the stadium the way we did before, but respecting a series of measures that we are studying at the moment.”

Torino’s Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino already installed a new system to check for body temperature, face masks and emit a puff of antibacterial agent as people walk through the turnstile.

Social distancing will be the main issue, which shouldn’t be too difficult if fans stick to their allotted seats, leaving gaps between them.

In the latest figures released yesterday, there were 10 new coronavirus-related deaths in Italy over 24 hours, with 306 new positive cases out of 60,311 tests.

However, only 49 remain in intensive care and 713 are hospitalised with symptoms.

Another 11,642 are self-isolating at home with only minor or no symptoms.
