Paulo Sousa again refused to answer questions on his Fiorentina future and warned they need “pace and quality” against Sassuolo.

“Sassuolo are doing very well and make intensity their greatest strength,” said the Coach in a Press conference.

“They are a difficult side to face, as they press you high with many players. We’ll need pace and quality, making the most of the one-on-one duels.

“We have certain players and that is why we must focus on a type of football that suits their technical and tactical characteristics.

“It has been an odd week. At Empoli creating chances was not enough. Perhaps tomorrow we won’t have as many scoring opportunities, but have to make them count and interrupt this negative streak.

“We’ve got to get our guts out and repay all the fans who continue to believe in us. We’ve been working on the problem of intensity, but there are very clear statistics that show in the second half of the season everyone ran more and with greater acceleration. Psychological intensity is not the same as physical.”

Fiorentina’s downturn has coincided with the growing reports on Sousa’s future, including meetings with Zenit St Petersburg.

“I always speak to the patron about the present and the future, because I am a clear person with a constructive spirit. I consider myself a very direct and clear person.

“Will I start an era with the Viola? I focus only on giving my best at this moment, as I am concentrated on the team and its players. I always tried to be honest and clear with everyone, so it disappointed me to read things in the papers that weren’t true.”

Davide Astori is suspended, but Mati Fernandez returns to the fold.
